There are three options that are commonly available: frequent nail trimming, nail caps or declawing.

Nail clipping will need to be done every 10-14 days, maybe even more frequently. It should be done using sharp nail clippers. These can be purchased in pet supply stores or you may use the human variety. Nail clipping is something that can be done by yourself, but requires effort and patience to get your kitten or cat used to it. If you can not do it yourself, veterinary clinics and grooming salons offer this service.

Cats can also be encouraged to use scratching posts by placing them near areas that they have been scratching. Scratching posts are widely available and can come carpet covered, rope covered or even made of recycled card board .Playing with cats near these scratching posts, covering the posts with cat nip or attaching toys to the scratching posts are all things that can be done to encourage a cat to use them.
