You should always have one more litter box than total number of cats in the house. Ideally, an unscented clumping litter should be used. There are, however, other kinds of litter made from everything from gravel to recycled newspaper that are available. Litter boxes should be quite big - always purchase jumbo litter pans - and they should not have a hood. The use of unscented litter is important because scented litters can make the litter box uninviting for a cat and even can induce allergies in your cat. If you are looking for odor control use the following guidelines:
- Scoop the litter box at least once daily.
- Fully change the litter once every 7-10 days and wash the litter box with warm soapy water (rinse well) before pouring fresh new litter in the box.
- Keep the cat litter about 2 inches deep at all times.
- You may even sprinkle some baking soda - NOT THE SCENTED VARIETY - in the bottom of the litter pan before pouring new litter in the box. This serves to neutralize the ammonia in the urine and helps to control odour.
