Introducing a kitten or a cat to a new environment

A cat is naturally curious and will want to investigate a new home. Limit the area that a kitten lives in first to a room that has a litter box and food and water bowls until the kitten gets used to his/her surroundings. Within a few days, the kitten may be allowed into other areas of the home to explore. Please make sure that your home is "kitten-proof" - no access to string or rubber bands that can be swallowed and no ready access to electrical cords that can be chewed on. When you leave your house - it is a good idea to confine your kitten to one room of the home. Over time, you may allow your kitten more freedom in your absence, but until that time comes, it is better to be safe.

If there are already cats in the house, confining your kitten to one room for a few days is also important. Try to choose a room that the resident cats do not use a lot and keep their favourite areas for them. Cats rely on smell a lot when checking out a new "house mate". Therefore, after a day or two, you may remove the kitten from it’s room and allow the resident cats to go into the room to get the kitten’s scent. You may allow the kitten into the other areas of the home to get the scent of the resident cats.
