Housetraining Basics

  • Successful housetraining begins with a healthy puppy. Ensure that your new puppy is on top-quality food and is free of intestinal parasites. If your puppy seems to be urinating frequently, or you have a setback in training, bring a urine specimen to your vet.
  • Puppies should be supervised or confined 100% of the time. Allowing them the opportunity to have an accident in the house confuses them.
  • Help your dog develop control by keeping it in a safe place when you are not home, or asleep. A crate, or small room with a baby-gate will help. Small dogs may see a house as very large, this can delay housetraining. It is helpful to expand their freedom gradually and slowly.
  • When you are able to supervise the puppy, keep them in the same room with you. If the puppy starts to have an accident, say “No, Outside” as you scoop them up and RUN!! If the pup is too large to carry, use a leash to lead the puppy outside.
  • Chose a location for the puppy to do its business. When you are outside in this location, use a cue phrase (“do your pee”); only use it in this location at the appropriate time. Do not use the cue phrase indoors; instead use the word ”outside”.
