Pet Loss and Grief Management

The loss of a cherished pet can be devastating. Among our closest companions, a family pet faithfully provides unconditional love, emotional security and loyalty. For some, death of devoted pet may mean the loss of a lifestyle, as companion animal can provide means of relaxation, fun and social contact in our daily lives. For those who are emotionally or physically dependent upon their pet, including children, the elderly or the disabled, this loss can be particularly painful.

Grief can be a very personal experience. Sometimes lack of understanding and support from those around us can make the grieving period even more difficult. There is no right or wrong way to feel. A big part of healing is to admit and express how you feel. Write your feelings in a journal, or reach out to a friend or counselor or let yourself cry.

Many people find comfort in rituals. Set some time aside to think about the good times you have shared with your pet, and the ways that they have enriched your life. This can be private or you could organize a small service or memorial. This is also a time to give extra attention to other pets, who may also need consolation during this time.
