What should I do in an Emergency?
- Remain calm and try not to panic. By doing so, you will be able to administer first aid and answer you veterinarians questions.
- Contact your veterinarian. Explain what has happened and follow the advice given.
- If your dog needs veterinary assistance, contact the hospital before you arrive, information about how to transport, what to bring (ingested toxin), and what to do on the way may significantly improve the outcome.
- Keep your dog warm and as quiet as possible.
- Keep your pet as still as possible when moving to reduce the risk of further injury.
- Carry out any first aid procedures advised by your veterinarian.
- When panicked or injured, even the gentlest family dog may bite. It is prudent to muzzle the patient when administering first aid. Exceptions include a patient retching or trying to vomit, having difficulty breathing, is unconscious or has injury to the mouth. Muzzles should be avoided in short-nosed breeds.
- Transport your dog safely to the veterinarian as directed. Obey traffic laws so not to put yourself and others at risk.
