Can I discipline a kitten or cat?

Disciplining a young kitten or cat may be necessary if its behaviour threatens people or property, but harsh punishment should be avoided at all times. Remote discipline involves using something that appears unconnected to a person to deter the undesirable behaviour. Examples of remote discipline involve using shaker cans, horns, a loud “pssssssst” or loud hand clapping.

Examples of inappropriate discipline are hitting a cat or rubbing it’s nose in urine or feces if a cat has used outside the litter box. ( See litter box section and urinary issues section for more information on this subject.)

Discipline must be meted out immediately - 3 seconds after the fact is too late!

Hitting your pet is never an appropriate or effective form of discipline!
