Airline Travel with Your Cat

Cats fly everyday. Preparation can go a long way to ensure that things go as smoothly as possible for you and your cat. It is impossible to overemphasize the need to consult with the airline well in advance of your trip This is essential to avoid last minute problems.

If your travel takes you to another country, please check with the Canada Food Inspection Agency, www.inspection.gc.ca, about the requirements for importation of animals of your country of destination well in advance of departure.

Determine whether the airline has requirements for "acclimation". In the event that you are unable to secure a direct flight to your destination, the pet carrier may be left outside the plane for a period of time. To avoid liability on their part the airline may require a letter from your veterinarian stating that the pet is healthy enough to withstand a minimum or maximum temperature. The airline will be able to give you an idea of what that temperature may be.

You may need to consider insurance for your pet in the event that something happens in transit.
